From
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Zé Maurício has
been in New York for the last 10 years.
Zé is an original member of "Cyro
Baptista's: Beat the Donkey", a percussion
ensemble performing in the U.S., Africa, and Europe.
He also performs with an eclectic blend of local bands.
Since winter 2001, Zé is part of "Choro
Ensemble", the only band dedicated
exclusively to Choro Music in New York.
Recently Zé performed with Wynton Marsalis and
the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra lending his strong
groove to the Carnival on Broadway - The Music of
Brazil concert series. Also spent some time recording
with Yo-Yo Ma for his CD "Obrigado Brasil !"
- a Grammy Winner. During this session Zé brought
his drum fluency to the presence of masters such as,
Paquito D' Rivera, Nilson Matta, Hélio Alves,
Romero Lubambo, and Cyro
Baptista. "Since 2003, Zé is
a LP - Latin Percussion endorsed artist and on his recently
done tour with Choro Ensemble in Brazil, Zé got
signed with Contemporânea for an endorsement in
all Brazilian percussion line."
